Cannabinoids and Psychosis – Their Links and Violence Risk
Presenter: Kevin R. Kurian, Ph.D., Licensed Clinical Psychologist
Kerrville State Hospital (KSH)
Presentation Summary: Psychotic disorders are characterized by difficulty identifying reality. When this gets difficult or oppressive, some turn to marijuana to quiet their symptoms and “self-medicate”. Others may find that they did not have trouble identifying reality, but after continued use of marijuana, they now have trouble with seeing and hearing things they never did before. Participants in this workshop will examine the link between cannabinoids and psychosis. There will be a review of the nature of psychosis and the effects of cannabis use. Additionally, violence risk will also be discussed as it relates to psychotic disorders and cannabis abuse.
Presenter Bio: Dr. Kurian is a licensed clinical psychologist at Kerrville State Hospital (KSH). At KSH, he conducts clinical and forensic psychological evaluations for patients committed to the hospital under 46B (incompetent to stand trial) and 46C (not guilty by reason of insanity) court commitments. Additionally, he provides individual and group psychotherapy. He has testified in Texas courts as an expert witness on violence risk for patients that have committed felonies and seek to be reintegrated into the community. Currently, Dr. Kurian has designed and operates one of the largest forensic databases in the United States, used for tracking and evaluating predictive clinical factors in the treatment of persons with mental illness and community outcomes upon discharge. A manuscript is currently under publication review. Dr. Kurian also works with Stonebridge Alliance in San Antonio conducting evaluations of children in foster care as well as evaluations of adults/parents with active CPS cases to assist courts in making permanency placement decisions. Dr. Kurian earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA. His clinical interests include psychotic disorders and spiritual expression.
