The Harvey E. Najim Family Foundation Has a Big Heart for Substance Abuse Prevention Education

(San Antonio, Texas) – The Harvey E. Najim Family Foundation selects the San Antonio Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (SACADA) as recipient of a $50,000 grant to support the “Project Heart” youth prevention program.
The “Project Heart” youth prevention program provides substance abuse prevention education to at-risk youth ages 8-thirteen through in-school and after-school programs. Currently, SACADA’S prevention specialists are partnering with eleven school districts and forty-five schools to obtain student referrals from teachers and counselors to be placed in the “Project Heart” sessions based on their observations of the student or other risk factors they are aware of. The program’s goals are to increase self-esteem, strengthen communication skills, teach stress management methods, encourage healthy decision making as well as providing the skills to achieve the students dreams and goals which ultimately creates a sense of purpose for their future.

About SACADA– SACADA was founded in 1957, by a small group of citizens whose lives had been affected by the disease of alcoholism. SACADA has been a leader in providing substance abuse prevention, intervention, recovery support, and education in Bexar County. In 2014, SACADA served over 60,000 children and adults. Of the number served, 75% of them were children, of which 80% met the poverty guidelines. SACADA provides prevention, intervention and recovery services for children and adults in Bexar County.
