Elementary Curriculum Description
YPS – Kids Connection
This is a Selective program, meaning that the youth we work with are at a higher-than-average risk for drug use. There are many factors that may play into why the child is at higher risk: parents are in recovery for drug use, death of a parent or care taker because of drug use, parents incarcerated, unstable home environment, disciplinary problems at home or school, or parents going through divorce with no healthy adults to support and mentor children while going through this process.
One of the curricula we use is Kids Connection, by Rainbow Days. This is an evidence-based curriculum that has been proven successful in reducing drug use. SACADA Staff has been specially trained to teach this curriculum. The program is a 10 week program that works on the children’s resiliency and social skills. By enhancing these skills, a child is less likely to use drugs as a coping mechanism.
This program can be taught to children in 1st – 5th grade. Please contact the program director for more information.
YPU – Botvin LifeSkills
Botvin LifeSkills Training (LST) is a research-validated substance abuse prevention program proven to reduce the risks of alcohol, tobacco, drug abuse, and violence by targeting the major social and psychological factors that promote the initiation of substance use and other risky behaviors. Rather than merely teaching information about the dangers of drug abuse, Botvin LifeSkills Training promotes healthy alternatives to risky behavior through activities designed to:
* Teach positive social skills
* Increase self-esteem and self-confidence
* Effectively cope with anxiety
* Increase their knowledge of the immediate consequences of substance abuse
This program is designed to work with a classroom-sized group of 15-25 students at a time, ages 8-12 (3rd – 5th grade).
